Basketball

Basketball is a fast-paced team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by throwing a ball through the opposing team’s hoop or basket, which is elevated 10 feet above the floor. The game is played on a rectangular court with a hoop at each end. Scoring can be achieved through field goals, worth two or three points depending on the player’s distance from the basket, or free throws, which are worth one point each.

Players advance the ball by dribbling (bouncing the ball while moving) or passing to teammates. The objective is to outscore the opponent within a set time limit, usually divided into quarters. Basketball emphasizes skills such as shooting, dribbling, passing, and defensive maneuvers.

It is governed by a set of rules, with common fouls and violations, including traveling, double dribbling, and personal fouls. The sport originated in the United States in the late 19th century and has grown to become a global phenomenon, with professional leagues such as the NBA (National Basketball Association) and numerous international competitions.
